#BUSINESSATHLETE PART 3 | ARE YOU COACHABLE?

In case you missed the part of this series, Part 1 is here: https://lnkd.in/gvsNm4YT

If you need convincing YOU are a Business Athlete, Part 2 is here: https://lnkd.in/gBMCgh87

Now that you know what it is and that you are one too, Part 3 is all about being a #COACHABLE Business Athlete.

Let me start by defining COACHABLE ➡ it is the combination of the mindsets and behaviors for continuously integrating feedback to drive growth and change within ourselves

The importance of being coachable was engrained in me as I came up as an athlete. Thankfully, with the coaches I played ball for, it was crystal clear to me that being coachable was table stakes. Coachability was expected and nothing less was tolerated. It was also clear to me that my coaches had learned to be coachable too. That's part of why they were so good - and how they got the best out of their athletes.

Below is an example of coaching interaction with me and my high school basketball coach, the GOAT, Tom Kempf. There was always room for questions and discussion, but it was clear to him - and me - that my role was to integrate feedback and learnings to improve - to evolve as a player and a person. When the ball stopped bounding in my world, I transferred that desire to be coachable to my work life and have been lucky to be coached by some of the GOATs including Felicia Hall Allen Alfred White Fred Mangione Matt Pazaras Lisa Hyman Pam Harris & Leslie Harris.

Here's the thing #LEADERS AT ALL CAREER STAGES ➡ being coachable takes work and isn't always easy. We are human so ego and stubbornness can and do flare up - and result in us getting in our own way.

The magic of coachability happens the more we can shed those reactions - lean into consistently applying feedback and advice with focus and bravery - maintain the mental and emotional openness needed to consistently observe its impact — and adapt.

All that said - take a moment to "look in the mirror" ask the Business Athlete inside you:

- AM I COACHABLE?

- HOW COACHABLE AM I?

- IF I ALLOW MYSELF TO BE MORE COACHABLE, WILL I GET OUT OF MY OWN WAY ON MY PATH FORWARD?

- AM I ALLOWING MYSELF TO BE COACHABLE IN BOTH MY ROLES AS A "PLAYER" AND A "COACH"?

- WHAT CAN I DO TO BE MORE COACHABLE?

Take a moment to realize in large part you hold the keys to being (more) coachable - to evolving into the Business Athlete "player" and "coach" you are meant to be.
