SUNDAY STORIES | GATES ALONG THE JOURNEY
Today I did a big adventure mountain bike ride with my amazing husband John Griffiths - through the gorgeous green English countryside - and it was magical.
- 47 mtb miles ridden
- 7,346 ft of vert gained
- 7.5 hrs total
- 6.3 hrs moving
- Heaps of sheep - cows - wild ponies - pheasants and a fox! 🦊
- Countless gates to pass through (or over) along the way...
The gates we encountered riding today are meant to enclose and protect livestock, mark property line boundaries, and make it harder for people to gain access to the area.
When we came to the gate pictured below I got to thinking about the role of gates along the work journey... and here we are.
In work life, we often create gates out of things like other people, email, voicemail, the follow/unfollow button, the block button, the connect or ignore buttons, calendar settings and more.
These gates can be super helpful when created with intention. They can help us establish and maintain boundaries. They can help us funnel communication, protect our time and energy and allow us to focus on the highest priorities.
At the same time, gates we erect can keep out new people, experiences and perspectives that could enlighten and enrich the journey. They can block or limit opportunity finding us. They can get in the way of free flowing communication.
When we encounter gates others create, it's easy to forget we purposely set up gates too. It's easy to get annoyed that the gate is blocking our easy access to the person or thing we are seeking. It's also easy to forget that not every gate is meant to be accessed.
With all that said - I simply encourage all of us to be aware of and curious about the gates we create and of how we react to the ones we encounter. In my experience, this kind of exercise can lead to positive impact and evolving 💫

➡️ ARE THE GATES SERVING OR HINDERING ME?
➡️ WHERE DO I ENCOUNTER GATES?
➡️ HOW DO I REACT TO GATES I ENCOUNTER?
➡️ DO I RESPECT THE GATES OTHERS ESTABLISH?
